How to read the Langebaan wind

Wind direction. Arrows on the forecasts point the way the wind is blowing. On the West Coast the main riding wind in summer comes from the south or south-east, and it is usually what kiters and wingers on the lagoon are waiting for.

The summer south-easterly. Often called the Cape Doctor, the south-easterly tends to build through the late morning and afternoon on good days. Forecasts can underestimate gusts, so compare the forecast with the live cam before heading out.

Best season. The most reliable wind is generally in the Southern Hemisphere summer, roughly October to March. Winter brings more variable conditions and passing cold fronts.

Wind strength. Look at both the average speed and the gusts. A steady wind is easier to learn in than a gusty one. If you are unsure whether the day suits your level, ask us and we will help you decide.
