"How long does it take to learn kitesurfing?" is the question we hear most often on the beach in Langebaan. Constantly Kiting has been teaching beginners on Langebaan Lagoon since 2007, so we asked our head coach, Wesley Fourie, to answer it properly: how many hours it really takes, how a beginner course is structured, and what helps students progress faster.
1. How Long Have You Been Kitesurfing and Teaching?
"I've been kitesurfing since 2001 and teaching since 2004, when I started out in England. These days I teach somewhere between 50 and 100 complete beginners every year."
Wesley had been teaching for a few years before Constantly Kiting started teaching on Langebaan Lagoon in 2007.
2. So, How Long Does It Take to Learn Kitesurfing?
"To ride independently, most people need somewhere between 10 and 15 hours. The IKO standard is 10 hours, but it really does vary from person to person."
3. What Does a Beginner Course Look Like?
"We start on the beach. Once you're comfortable with the kite, we move into the water for body dragging, with all the safety skills that come with it. Then we introduce the board. Usually that all happens over three to five days."
Our beginner kitesurfing courses follow the same progression:
- Day 1 Taster Session (3 hours, private): kite theory, wind awareness, safety systems, kite flying on land and your first body drag in the water.
- Day 2 Momentum Course (6 hours over 2 days, private): the full beginner curriculum, through body dragging, water relaunch, self-rescue, the waterstart and your first real ride.
- Day 3 Full Progression (9 hours over 3 days, private): adds upwind riding, directional control, and independent launching and landing, working towards IKO Level 2.
- Group Intro Session (4 hours) and Group Discovery Package (8 hours over 2 days): the same stages with a maximum of two students sharing one kite and instructor.
- Group Top-Up Hours: individual hours to work on your waterstart, board riding and upwind progress.

4. Is Langebaan a Good Place to Learn?
"Langebaan isn't a tricky spot, so progression is quick. It's also really accessible, with restaurants and accommodation close by. The ideal season is October to April, when the southeaster blows consistently."
We confirm lesson times around the wind forecast. Before your session, check the conditions on our Langebaan live wind forecast and kite cam.
5. Does Radio Coaching Really Make a Difference?
"It's much quicker. With a radio, your instructor is right there in your ear. We're communicating the whole time, and you don't have to touch the radio yourself."

6. What Slows Beginners Down the Most?
"Resisting the instructor. Natural ability helps, but if you fight the instruction, you'll either progress more slowly or end up getting hurt."
7. Who Learns the Fastest?
"Snowboarders pick it up the quickest, and wakeboarding helps too. That said, I've seen even professional surfers battle with it."
8. Private or Group Lessons?
"If you want speed and focus, go private. If you're learning with family or friends and want to have fun together, group lessons are great."

9. What's Your Advice Before a First Lesson?
"Come with an open mind. Any anxiety usually disappears after the first day. Follow your instructor and you'll learn fast."

10. Who Is Your Favourite Student?
"One of my favourites goes back to when the school opened. She'd wanted to kitesurf for years, and within three or four sessions she was up and riding. Kitesurfing became her lifestyle and completely transformed her health. She's still a friend today, and she's a real inspiration."
